I like the letter, it's to the point and covers an important few points.

Very harsh on the last line, but I think it'll scan.

I have written my own letter to Mr. X. Let me know if anything is wrong or if this letter needs more work.

Dear Mr. Xenophon,

Thank you for taking a stand against the ALP Government's proposed mandatory ISP filtering, which is headed by Stephen Conroy.

Before the last election, the ALP promised to “offer a clean feed to all households, businesses and libraries”. In October 2008, about eleven months after the Government was elected, this promise turned out to be a lie. There is a big difference between saying “offer” and “require everyone to use”. The filter was originally aimed at child pornography, but it was more than that.

I believe that those groups who support filtering include the Australian Christian Lobby; Bernadette McMenamin, CEO of ChildWise; Clive Hamilton; and six of the Internet Service Providers who were chosen to participate in the live trails. These companies, however, fail to realize that filtering will cripple Internet speeds, waste money, be easily bypassed, violates freedom of speech, and result in blocking even legitimate web sites. As you can see, I oppose filtering of any kind, and I am furious to hear Conroy saying that people who oppose filtering are advocates of child pornography.

If the ALP really wants to get the legislation through the Senate, then I am sure that some changes have to be made; and one of these changes would me to make the filtering optional, that parents with children can opt-in to. After all, do we want to end up like non-democratic societies such as China, Iran, Burma, and North Korea?

Once again, thank you for opposing this mandatory filter, and I hope that you continue to oppose it. Any back-down on your policy regarding this issue would be most unwelcome.

Good point Websinthe, but I don't think that being optimistic is a bad thing as long as you don't become complacent. I have contacted Senator Xenophon through the Senate website to show him my support. There's still work to be done, of course, but I think the tide is turning against Senator Conroy.

Mr. Xenophon, and lest we forget Mr. Fielding and all five of the Greens Senators, may well be the lynchpins in the Federal Vote For Anything Until The Next By-Election - but I agree with your assessment. We have *one* (highly fluctual SHOW ME THE MONEY) Senator out of seventy six (!) that might possibly maybe perhaps be in a position to "scuttle" the bill.

Mr. Xenophon isn't a surety, and never will be. We saw that with PM Rudd's $900 WiiFit/GuitarHero&Travel/Booze scheme - offer Mr. Xenophon what he wants (he's an independent, of course he'll take what he's given and thank his lucky stars for the offer) and his vote is bought.

Our battle isn't over. Mr. Xenophon, while a key vote and earning my respect for his position, is nothing but a sheep in wolf's clothing.

It's a really disappointing policy, and it's bringing out the worst in a lot of people on both sides of the argument. I just want it to go away already, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised with the way that it's going if it ends up another massive misdirection of government spending. I just don't think our political system is equipped to make sensible decisions about technology.
