When you press the button on your answering machine, your greatest fear is usually a message from your mother-in-law.
Not so for EFA board member Geordie Guy. When Geordie arrived home from work last Friday, he was greeted by a message threatening him with violence.
“Strangely enough the caller said that I was to ‘Cut the libertarian bullshit’…” Geordie says, “They told me to keep my name out of the papers etc or I’d be very sorry”
The threat was made around 11am on Friday morning from a Payphone and has drawn serious interest from the police.
According to Geordie, the threat was clear that it was regarding “a letter to the editor about Jim Wallace’s opinion piece.”
When asked about the seriousness of the threat Geordie responded that “…the guy sounded really, really seething angry.”
The threat came after Geordie publicly criticised the Australian Christian Lobby’s contentious article supporting ISP level censorship in the Sydney Morning Herald. As one of the EFA’s most vocal board members Geordie has been a public face for the campaign against the Government’s attempts to censor what people can view on the Internet.
Civil liberties groups such as the EFA and GetUp! have drawn fire from the Christian lobby for questioning the government’s plan to restrict what can be seen, heard or read online. Jim Wallace, Managing Director of the ACL has been widely criticised for being misleading in his statements both in his SMH article and in a radio interview on Radio National.
